It's worth saying again: I love Captain Harlock. I don't know what the Japanese versions of his stories are like, the English stories are a bit melodramatic. They're generally tragic in tone, yet uplifting. Ooofff... here it comes... it's like Tolkien.

I'm such a geek.

I mean, sorta like Tolkien. Harlock is a Space Pirate, but he's a pirate because the Establishment is the enemy of freedom. He's a pirate the way Robin Hood was a bandit, basically. The Harlock stories have themes of honor and courage and determination in the face of disaster. I really must find the Harlock Saga on DVD. Very strange retelling of the Ring story... er... Wagner's Ring story, not Tolkien's.

And back to that point, the likeness is in that the characters make similar choices when faced with what looks like certain doom.

Harlock lives!
